Shimano Di2 Dura-Ace ST-9070 Shift Lever Set Review

Shimano Di2 Dura-Ace ST-9070 Shift Lever Set

  • Material: [hoods] dual-compound rubber
  • Type: electronic
  • Compatible Components: Shimano Dura-Ace 9070 and 7970
  • Claimed Weight: 237 g
  • Recommended Use: road racing and cyclocross

Dura-Ace Di2 has become renowned as “the” electronic shifting system to trust. And while it neared perfection, leave it to Shimano to improve upon it even more with the advent of the Dura-Ace Di2 9070 11-Speed STI Shifters. First and foremost, you’ll notice that the new Di2 features 11 speeds, which is quickly becoming the number to hit. But beyond that, Shimano looked at the aesthetics and ergonomics of the levers to create touch points that enhance your riding experience. The shape of the levers has been given even more of an outward curve while also growing in length. This allows for a better interaction with the levers, whether you’re on the hoods or in the drops. Speaking of the hoods, they are made from a dual-compound rubber composite with a perforated design, but are now smaller and slimmer in shape. Conversely, the shift paddles have been widened for a better interface in the heat of the moment. Shimano still adds in 10mm of reach adjustment. Beyond the aesthetics is the shifting performance. It is here that Shimano’s Rider-Tuned philosophy takes shape. For example, with the Di2 9070, you’re able to select one of five different rear derailleur shifting speeds. More impressive is that the 9070 is now capable of performing shifts up to 28 teeth on the cassette. To enhance shifting, a more minimal single-wire E-Tube connection is used. This also makes for more options for the inclusion of satellite shifting systems.

Shimano ST-R785 Di2 Hydraulic STI Lever & Disc Brake Caliper Set Review

Shimano ST-R785 Di2 Hydraulic STI Lever & Disc Brake Caliper Set

  • Lever: ST-R785 Di2 hydraulic STI
  • Actuation: hydraulic
  • Caliper: BR-R785 hydraulic disc brake
  • Mount Type: post
  • Fluid: mineral oil

The R785 Di2 Hydraulic STI Lever and Disc Brake Caliper Set marks Shimano’s hydraulic disc brake debut, and because the UCI has not yet approved disc brakes at the pro-level (for which its flagship Dura-Ace groupset is intended), the R785 is atop the pack. The R785s feature Shimano’s IceTech technology, which results in braking power that is consistent no matter what the conditions. By placing cooling fins in the braking pads, Shimano has found a way to dissipate heat more effectively, allowing the brakes to grab faster and the pads to last longer. In addition, Shimano’s disc break system was designed to work with Di2 electronic shifting. In order to hold the fluid reservoir for mineral oil, the front profile of the R785s is higher than previous Ultegra profiles. The R785s also feature reach and stroke adjustments to ensure that your hand position is ideal. Lastly, keep in mind that Shimano’s ST-R785 Di2 Hydraulic STI Lever and Disc Brake Caliper Set does not include the rotors.
