  • Shimano Dura-Ace RD7900-SS 10-Speed Rear Derailleur Tech Grey.

Shimano’s dominant position in the bike industry is based foremost on one simple fact: They can forge metals with a creativity and sophistication far beyond anything their competitors can dream. Shimano factories are crammed with VW Bug-sized forging machines that spend all day long pounding alloys into highly precise little bits that — after final assembly — make a Dura-Ace bike brake and shift and look so fine. Shimano = Forging. It’s as simple as that, and that’s the reason why they long resisted the temptation to wander into the world of carbon. The rest of the industry, of course, embraced carbon with an untrammeled cheek-to-cheek, two-arms-and-two-legs enthusiasm, and while they were at it, they accused Shimano of being a fuddy-duudy for not doing the same. Shimano’s position was simple: Anything carbon can do, forged metal can do better — lightness, durability, cost, you name it.Still, there’s something cosmetically sexy about carbon. And market trends are what they are — consumers vote with their wallets, and they’re choosing carbon. With the Dura-Ace 7900 series components, Shimano proves that while they may move deliberately, they are most definitely not fuddy-duddies. Case in point, the Dura-Ace RD-7900 rear derailleur –The Dura-Ace RD-7900 is Shimano’s first ever rear derailleur that makes use of carbon fiber. The pulley cage and P-body are both made of carbon to shave off 16g in comparison to the RD-7800 rear derailleur. Shimano states that their choice of carbon vs. alloy here has no detrimental effect to long-term durability of the derailleur. And while the carbon vs. alloy debate has a timelessness to it akin to Red Sox vs. Yankees, there’s something else going on with the RD-7900 that — at least to us — is far bigger news: It has an expanded chain wrap capacity in comparison to the RD-7800. What’s chain wrap capacity? It’s a simple math equation: (Big ring – Small ring) + (Big cog – Small cog) = Chain Wrap Capacity.

  • Fast and accurate shifting
  • 11-speed design

  • More equal shifting effort through the range

While 11-speeds are amazing, to be perfectly honest, we’d be just as excited to have the Shimano Dura-Ace RD-9000 11-Speed Rear Derailleur in an 8-speed iteration. The reason is simple — the RD-9000 is the physical form of everything that we love about Dura-Ace. Persistent innovation, superior reliability, and near-perfect shift quality — these are the hallmarks of Dura-Ace, and they’re all presented here, with the RD-9000. In even plainer speak — this is Shimano’s finest mechanical rear derailleur to date. To start, we should explain Dura-Ace 9000’s main shifting goal — easier action with a shorter stroke at the lever. To achieve this, it required a revision of the leverage points on the derailleur’s body. You’ll notice that RD-9000’s cable anchor bolt rests at more of a forward angle than on 7900. This not only creates more leverage, but it also strengthens the pull, eases the actuation, and thus helps lessen the shift stroke. For this iteration of Dura-Ace, you can also expect to see the return of the carbon cage and p-body. The construction complements the beautiful forging and assists in 9000’s six gram weight reduction, but mainly, the carbon reduces vibratory interference and produces a light, crisp shift over the cassette. In fact, Shimano fanatics will immediately notice the focus paid to making a slight alteration to the feel of the shift. As we all know, Dura-Ace tends to snap the chain up the cassette, but it feels like it drops the chain from cog-to-cog on the way down. Now, the RD-9000 creates an equal, positive sensation regardless of the direction of your shift, or the size of the sprocket that you’re shifting to. And we’ll tell you now, that you have a large cluster at your disposal. Not only can you expect to apply an equal lever-force at the top and bottom of the cassette, but the Dura-Ace rear derailleur can handle up to a 28 tooth sprocket.

Shimano’s move to 11-speed MTB has been about more than just adding another cog. It’s about fundamentally redesigning the way the entire system shifts to make it smoother, crisper, and more reliable. The all-new Deore XT M8000 shifters have been completely redesigned from the last generation to provide a simple, adaptable cockpit with the latest technology. Shift feel has been reengineered to be 20% for the rear, meaning far less force is required to shift the chain. A longer lever body gives you more leverage to work with, further enhancing the feel and ease of shifting. The internal mechanism has been completely redesigned for consistently stable shifting that will shift perfectly every time, and require none of the odd little “nudges” to get the chain into gear. This is coupled with an all-new shift cable and house with hyper low-friction coatings. Finally, for that nice little touch, the levers both have anti-slip coating to ensure your thumbs always stay where they need to be, in even the wettest conditions.Features: Reengineered for 20% lighter rear shifts Longer lever design makes shifting under load easier Consistently stable shifting design moves the chain precisely onto the right cog New cables and housing with hyper low-friction coating Anti-slip coating on shift lever Choose left or right shifter

Shimano’s new Dura-Ace Di2 RD-R9150 11-Speed Rear Derailleur boasts a sleek profile that practically hides from the wind and finally brings the Synchronized Shift functionality honed in the trail-focused XTR Di2 system onto the road. Enabling Synchronized Shift lets the Di2 system work its magic to automatically shuttle your chain from cog to cog without any input from you and intelligently manage the fleet of cogs at the aft-end of your drivetrain. That said, it isn’t a requirement to use, so the traditionalists among us will breathe a sigh of relief that this derailleur also allows the same precise, manually controlled and customizable shifting we’ve come to expect from Di2. By putting the rear and front derailleurs in communication with each other, Synchronized Shift can actually calculate your efficiency and perform simultaneous front and rear shifts to eliminate cross-chaining and set you up in the best chain line for any given gearing. These shifting patterns depend on the direction you’re shifting and the combination you’re shifting into, and they’re also programmable via Shimano’s E-Tube system, so you can set your preferences in advance to ensure that your internally communicating drivetrain isn’t conspiring against you. The shifting itself is peerless, as the derailleur always knows where it is, so its travel isn’t restricted or lengthened by imperfect cables. It situates the chain squarely on every cog and it jumps between those positions with startling speed. As with other Shimano Di2 bits, the Dura-Ace rear derailleur is compatible with Shimano’s rust-, stretch-, freeze-, and generally worry-free E-Tube wiring system. Its modularity makes it easy to set up on virtually any frame, though it does cohabitate with less friction when the frame is built with Di2 in mind.
