The Rival front derailleur is built with the same outer plate design as Red and Force, allowing you to use all 10 cogs on your cassette while you’re in the big chainring with minimal chain rub. You can cross-chain all day long in your big ring without having trim the front derailleur. And when you’re in the small ring you need only one trim position in order to make silent use of all 10 cogs. It’s identical in virtually every way to Red and Force, except that you get a high-polished aluminum finish with black highlights, and it lacks titanium hardware.Like Red and Force, the Rival front derailleur can handle any chainring differential up to 16 teeth. This means you’ll use the same derailleur for a 53/39 crankset as you will a 50/36 or 50/34. The braze-on version weighs in at 88g, while the clamp-on versions run closer to 103g. The title of the SRAM R2C 22-Speed Carbon TT Shifter Set is pretty self-explanatory, except maybe the ‘R2C’ part. Of course, that’s the part that really sets these shifters apart from the competition. R2C stands for ‘Return to Center’–the 2 just makes it look cooler on paper. It means that after every shift, the shift lever returns to its original position. That’s important because each shift requires exactly the same movement, without any awkward hand position adjustments. That center position is also adjustable, so you can start each shift exactly where you want to. The shift levers are made from carbon fiber to reduce weight and increase stiffness. SRAM designed the shifters to require the minimum possible amount of movement to complete a shift. The R2C 22-speed shifter set is designed for use with double front chainrings and an 11-speed cassette.
The latest iteration of SRAM’s Force 22 Front Derailleur boasts two properties that we typically don’t see together: accommodating flexibility and unyielding stiffness. The derailleur’s willingness to accommodate is the result of SRAM’s Yaw technology, which has only just trickled-down to the Force level. Yaw is the equivalent of an auto-trim feature that keeps the derailleur cage aligned with the chain as it moves through the sprockets, making for a truly 22-speed groupset by virtually eliminating chain rub. The derailleur’s stiffness comes courtesy of the aluminum and steel body. The incorporation of steel makes for an irresistible force to quickly shift the chain up or down without yielding valuable moments of response time while waiting for a flexing cage to finish throwing the chain–think of it as the opposite of the Close Door buttons on elevators. In case you get a little too overzealous with its stiff shifting, the Force Derailleur also features a removable Chain Keeper to help keep you from throwing your chain while shifting in response to an attack.
